The song's lyrics depict a man who cushions himself from the pain of a breakup by returning to the outside world: "And I won't cry for yesterday/There's an ordinary world I somehow have to find/And as I try to make my way to the ordinary world/I will learn to survive." These words have a surprisingly direct and adult tone that stands in direct contrast to the colorful wordplay of past hits like "The Reflex." The music behind these sentiments avoids dance rhythms and new wave minimalism to create a warm ballad feel, matching elegant verses full of entrancing repeating-note hooks with a rousing chorus built on soaring runs of ascending notes. They immediately hit paydirt with "Ordinary World," a lushly textured ballad that became a massive surprise hit at the end of 1992. Instead, the group had reinvented themselves yet again as a journeyman pop outfit that used their pop songcraft skills to create a slick combination of dance textures and earthier rock music elements.
However, the group on this album was neither the new wave band of the early '80s or the dance music outfit of the late '80s. Pop fans nostalgic for new wave sounds got a pleasant surprise in the early '90s when Duran Duran made an impressive comeback with their self-titled 1993 album.
